Obama has promised a review of the government’s deportation policies since the beginning of this year. In light of the elections in November, however, the Obama administration is considering waiting until after the elections are over to make immigration reform. The Democratic party is in jeopardy of looking bad if any false moves are made or the reforms made to immigration fail. In the mean time, the government plans to increase immigration enforcement and make more dramatic changes after the election. President Obama remains firm on the issue and may administer executive action to reform immigration to keep his promise. If he was to act immediately, he would face the wrath of the Republicans, who have a far right viewpoint on the issue. If he waited, Obama would have to deal with all of those who believe deportation should have been handled a long time ago.
This relates to the study of government, because not all of the branches get along all of the time. In this case, the President and Congress are at odds when it comes to immigration reform. The President has the power of executive action if Congress decides to do nothing about an issue. Also, there is change going on related to the laws that govern our country. Change in legislature is seen over the years because of the development of social and cultural values. Some people, including Obama, see deportation as a bad thing in today’s society. They are working to change the laws in order to make them more compatible with life in America.
